Chief Executive Officer

Dr Leonard Madzingaidzo is the Chief Executive Officer of SIRDC since 1 July 2023. Prior to this appointment, Dr Madzingaidzo was the Executive Director - Technical, superintending over the work programmes of the 12 SIRDC research institutes. He joined SIRDC in February 2000 as a Research Scientist in the Biotechnology Research Institute and assumed the position of Acting Director of the Institute from May 2002 until September 2003. Dr Madzingaidzo was then appointed substantive Director of the newly established Food and Biomedical Technology Institute in March 2003, and briefly led two research institutes, concurrently. In January 2005, he was elevated to the position of Executive Director - Technical. Before joining SIRDC, Dr Madzingaidzo had working stints namely, at the Dairy Marketing Board (now Dairibord Zimbabwe Limited), Standards Association of Zimbabwe and Cairns Foods Limited. Over the years, he has gained valuable experience in Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, Research and Development, Technology Transfer, Commercialisation, and Management of Intellectual Property Assets. An accomplished leader and scholar, Dr Madzingaidzo holds a Bachelor of Technology (Hons) degree in Applied Biology and Biochemistry (1 st Class) from the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) obtained in 1992; MSc in Biotechnology (Merit) from UZ obtained in 1994; and PhD in Biotechnology and Biochemical Technology (Suma Cum Laude) from the Vienna University of Agriculture and Life Sciences (BOKU) Austria, obtained in 1999. He is a beneficiary of Academic Scholarships from the Government of Zimbabwe; The Netherlands: Directorate-General for International Cooperation (DGIS) for MSc Studies at UZ and Free University of Amsterdam; and the Austrian Government through the Austrian Academic Exchange Service (OeAD) for Doctorate studies at BOKU and Vienna University of Technology. Dr Madzingaidzo is currently a board member of the Standards Association of Zimbabwe and sits on the Advisory Board of the Korea Partnership for Innovation in Agriculture (KOPIA). He has previously served as Chairman of the Science and Technology Advisory Committee of the Korea-Africa Food and Agriculture Cooperation Initiative (KAFACI) and as Vice Chairman of the Trade Measures Board under the Ministry of Industry and Commerce. Dr Madzingaidzo is a former member of the Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) and Women’s University in Africa (WUA), University Councils.

Executive Director (Technical)

Prof Tawanda Mushiri joined the Scientific & Industrial Research & Development Centre (SIRDC) Executive Director – Technical (ED-Tech) on 1 March 2024. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering, MSc in Manufacturing Systems and Operations Management (MSOM) and a PhD in Engineering focusing on fuzzy logic systems (Artificial Intelligence - AI). He has several certifications in Artificial Intelligence including Data Science, Machine Learning and Deep Learning. He has supervised university students in BSc, MSc, and PhD in areas of Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, AI, and Biomedical Engineering. Professor Mushiri is currently a Council Member of the Medical Rehabilitation Practitioners Council of Zimbabwe. He has previously served as Co-Chairperson of the Public Relations and Fundraising Committee of Sally Mugabe Central Hospital. He is a former Board Member of the Zimbabwe Standards Association (SAZ)’s Tariff Code Classification for Solar Products and Solar Photovoltaic Systems Technical Committee, Zimbabwe Standard. Professor Mushiri is also a former Board Member of the ISOlutions SAZ Zimbabwe Standard. His notable achievements include the design and installation of: • automated national vehicle number plate plant for use by the Central Vehicle Registry, • automated bread making plant, and • automated sanitiser production plant. His main research focus is on the Robotic First Aid (RFA) systems to reduce Road Traffic Accidents (RTA) and Disease Prediction Modelling using Artificial Intelligence. He has managed to do projects and grants up to USD$3,5m. His work at SIRDC involves but not limited to • Coordinate the research work of all the 12 Institutes which are: Biotechnology Research Institute (BRI), Geo-information & Remote Sensing Institute (GIRSI), Building Technology Institute (BTI), Informatics Institute (II), Electronics & Communications Institute (ECI), Metallurgical Research Institute (MRI), Energy Technology Institute (ETI), National Metrology Institute (NMI), Environmental Sciences Institute (ESI), Polymer Sciences Institute (PSI), Food & Biomedical Technology Institute (FBTI), Production Engineering Institute (PEI). • Overseeing the general operations of the Institutes • Overseeing professional development of Scientists • Overseeing the management of projects through the Stage Gate business model • Overseeing the protection and management of the Centre’s Intellectual Property Assets • Providing leadership in project management and marketing of SIRDC to stakeholders • Deputize the CEO in his absence.

Executive Director (Finance & Administration)

Mrs Gladys Getrude Mudyahoto was elevated to the post of Executive Director for Finance and Administration for SIRDC in December 2017. Before that she had been the Financial Controller and Board Secretary of SIRDC since 2003. She is also the Principal Officer of the SIRDC Pension Fund. Mrs Mudyahoto has proven competencies in financial planning and management, project management, strategy formulation and implementation as well as pension fund, payroll and tax administration. She holds an MBA degree from the University of Zimbabwe. She is a Fellow member of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (FCIS) and a member of the Public Accountants and Auditors Board (PAAB). She is the Chairperson of the MARSH Umbrella Fund Board of Trustees and member of the Advisory Committee of the Korea Programme on International Agriculture (KOPIA). Mrs Mudyahoto is also a member of Council for the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators in Zimbabwe.

Director: Biotechnology Research Institute

Dr Vimbai Samukange is the Director of the Biotechnology Research Institute with effect from July 2023. She has a broad-based background in the field of Biology. She received a B Sc degree in Food Science and Technology from the University of Zimbabwe in 2007, and an M Sc and Doctorate degrees in Agricultural Science obtained from Kyoto University, Japan in 2012 and 2015, respectively. In her postgraduate studies, she majored in Enzyme Chemistry with special focus on the role of Matrilysin (MMP-7) in cancer progression. From 2015 – 2018, she was a Postdoctoral researcher at Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST), Japan where she carried out research on the role of the nmr-1 gene in memory and learning in C. elegans. From 2019 to 08/2020, she worked as a Research Assistant at the Institute of Biochemistry in Romania, where she carried out research on ageing in C. elegans. She has been affiliated with the National Biotechnology Authority and The Biotech Institute. Dr Samukange taught the following modules at the University of Zimbabwe: Principles of Environmental Health, Cell Biology and Food Hygiene, and Disease Prevention and Control. Her areas of interest include: enzymology, ageing, nematology (C. elegans), generation of genetically better crops, drug discovery, development of Do-It-Yourself test kits for cancer, utilization of algae to produce commercially viable products and the identification of microorganisms for commercial applications. She is a member of the African Academy of Sciences.

Mr Sabelo Pride Ncube joined SIRDC in April 2020 as the Director of the Building Technology Institute. His exposure and experience cover over a decade of visionary contemporary sustainable space planning, design and development as well as project management within a range of business environments. He has global appreciation of green finance projects and exposure to conducive space making and science in private-public partnerships, public and private built environment good practice in Southern Africa, North America and Europe. He has knowledge of built environment practice from various universities to manage the scope, cost and time within a project range. His experience covers policy formulation and review, novelty and innovative ideas in problem solving, effective risk-based thinking and risk management, as the next growth pattern in striving for the best possible international industry standards in feasibility studies, planning, design, pre-search and research. He has proven strengths in quality management systems auditing, architectural service design process, facilities and real estate management, master planning in line with smart planning principles as well as understanding the value chains critical for research and development. Mr Ncube offers an invaluable resource, innovation, novelty and an ever evolving dimension to the existing body of knowledge, and further strengthens future expectations of the research at SIRDC. His vision is that of a dynamic research base of excellence, reputation, sustainable, contemporary and relevant physical infrastructure that will attract the highest quality performance in the built environment in Zimbabwe. Mr Ncube holds a Master of Architecture degree and is accredited to the Royal Institute of British Architects. He is also a certified Internal Quality Management Systems Auditor for ISO 9001:2015.

Mr Arthur Chikonobaya joined SIRDC in November 2011 as a Research Scientist and was elevated to Acting Director of the Electronics and Communications Institute in July 2018. His prior experience was gained from Glendale Spinners, Colcom Foods Limited, Irazim Textiles, and Headlane Engineering among other companies that he worked for. He merges the skills of an electrical artisan/engineer and an electronic engineer. He holds a Bachelor of Technology Honours degree in Electronic Engineering from the Harare Institute of Technology (HIT). His professional experience started in 2005 after doing Electrical Power Engineering and being a skilled worker class one electrician. He attained some practical experience and exposure in industry before undertaking his undergraduate studies in electronics at HIT in 2006. Mr Chikonobaya has vast experience in power systems design, Programmable Logic Controllers and Variable Speed Drives installation and programming. He is also into industrial automation, microcontroller programming, solar photovoltaic system design and installation, motor control systems, and power factor correction, among other areas of expertise. He also underwent training in India for Intelligent Networks and Value Added Services in the telecommunications industry. He has a keen interest on induction furnaces and induction heating equipment. Mr Chikonobaya has worked on automatic changeover/transfer switches including their design and installation for back-up power systems, security surveillance systems, inverter designs, SCADA and Human Machine Interface systems, among other electronic systems.

Director : Environmental Science Institute

Dr Farai Matawa is the Director of the Environmental Science Institute (ESI). He joined the SIRDC as a Research Scientist in the Geo-Information and Remote Sensing Institute in 2009. He was promoted to Senior Research Scientist in 2012 and Principal Scientist in 2020 before being appointed the ESI Director in 2024, a post he holds to date. Before joining SIRDC, Dr Matawa worked as a high school teacher. Dr Matawa holds a BA Honours degree in Geography, an MA degree in Environmental Policy and Planning and a Doctor of Philosophy Science degree in Spatial Ecology specialising in Geo-spatial Health from the University of Zimbabwe. Dr Matawa possesses skills in Advanced Geographical Information Science (GIS) and Earth Observation (EO), Programming and Strategic Environmental Assessment for Spatial Planning acquired from the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation, University of Twente in the Netherlands. The programme was funded through the Netherlands Fellowship Programme. He has extensive knowledge and experience in GIS, EO, Agent-Based Modelling, Statistical Analysis, Species Distribution Modelling, Environmental Science and Environmental Management and Industrial Environmental Management. He is also knowledgeable about the ‘One Health’ approach involving targeted approaches to vector control and surveillance. Dr Matawa has presented at conferences and published several scientific papers in international peer-reviewed journals, namely Geocarto International; Environmental Nanotechnology, Monitoring and Management; Human Ecology; and Applied Geography. He has a passion for developing, adopting and adapting environmentally friendly technologies that contribute to the sustainable utilisation of natural resources and the protection of the environment.

Engineer Tinotenda Zvavashe is a professional engineer specializing in Electronics and Renewable Energy. He has vast knowledge in design and development of electronics and renewable energy systems and products as well as aiding in capacity building in the energy sector. His research interests are in design of efficient electronic renewable energy products, performance optimization of solar PV electricity generators, and renewable energy resource assessment, including data acquisition and management, hybridization of energy generators and solar resource forecasting. He holds a B Eng (Hons) degree in Electronics from the National University of Science and Technology, an M Tech degree in Embedded Systems from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University in India. He has also undertook training on Wind Energy Technology; Grid Connected Solar PV Systems; Solar Cells and Light Emitting Diodes; Theory, Design and Implementation for Sustainable Electricity Generation and Lighting; Micro Air Vehicles; Avionics Systems in Modern Aircraft and Simulation of Wireless Networks Using NS2, among other professional development courses. He is also a registered member of the Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers and a registered professional engineer with the Engineering Council of Zimbabwe. He also sits on various technical committees of the Standards Association of Zimbabwe and is a technical member of the National Solar Water Heating Programme in Zimbabwe. Eng Zvavashe joined SIRDC in June 2020 as the Director of the Energy Technology Institute. Prior to joining SIRDC, he was engaged with several institutions including the Harare Institute of Technology as a Lecturer and researcher, National Institute of Wind Energy in India as a research fellow, Desti Technologies in India as a research fellow and the department of electronics at ZISCO Steel. Eng Zvavashe has published a number of research papers and has made research presentations at various forums locally and abroad.

Mr Paul is highly motivated and skilled professional with a passion for translational research and implementation in the field of vaccine development, drug discovery and new diagnostic tools. He is committed to making a positive impact on society. His vision is to contribute to the eradication of diseases and the improvement of drug and vaccine efficacy for the benefit of humanity, utilizing modern techniques to make a positive impact on society. Noah Paul is a highly skilled professional with a Master of Science degree in Biochemistry from the University of Zimbabwe, specializing in immuno-epidemiology, microbiology, and molecular biology. With over 8 years of experience in the academic and industry interface, Paul has built a strong background in experimental design, data analysis, and interpretation. Mr Paul is currently the Director of the Food and Biomedical Technology Institute (FBTI) at the Scientific and Industrial Research and Development Centre (SIRDC). In this role, Paul is responsible for overseeing the daily research and development activities of the institute, leading a team of scientists and technicians. Prior to my current position, Paul worked as a Teaching Assistant at the University of Zimbabwe, where he taught undergraduate Veterinary students in Biochemistry. Paul has also completed various professional courses, including Implementation Research, One Health in action against Neglected Tropical Diseases, and Infectious Disease Transmission Models for Decision-Makers. He also has a Masters equivalent Course in Vaccinology. Paul has also attended courses on Lumpy Skin Disease, and FMD Investigation that have expanded his knowledge and skills in the field of biomedical research. Mr Paul has contributed to the field of biomedical research, with 8 peer-reviewed publications and presenting at conferences and have had abstracts and posters displayed at various scientific events. Paul is a member of the Pan-African Mosquito Control Association (PAMCA ZWE Chapter), Zimbabwe Nanotechnology Group, Zimbabwe Immunology Society, Federation of African Immunological Societies, and the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Society of Zimbabwe.

Director : Geo-Information & Remote Sensing Institute

Dr Karen S Murwira is the Director of the Geo-Information and Remote Sensing Institute (GRSI) at SIRDC since 2006. Her major contribution has been disseminating remote sensing and GIS applications in various sectors through training including: High-Performance Computing, Operational Geo-databases, WebGIS, Information System Validation, Environmental Evaluation, Hydrological Modelling, developing a Flood Warning System, 3D Geology Modelling, High-resolution Satellite Image Remote Sensing, Spatially Enabling Databases, Habitat Modeling, Project Evaluation, setting up GIS units in organizations, as well as Customized Training. To be able to accomplish all this, Dr Murwira made sure that GRSI was well equipped with modern computers, GPS receivers and a satellite image receiving station. Dr Murwira started her scientific career in 1995 as a Research Scientist at the National Remote Sensing Centre in the Directorate of Forestry of Namibia where she was responsible for research activities in the fields of Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing. Dr Murwira is one of the pioneers of Hyperspectral Remote Sensing. As early as 1996, while doing her M Sc degree, she undertook an airborne hyperspectral remote sensing campaign of the Masai Mara grassland while at the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC). She then obtained a Ph D degree in Hyperspectral Remote Sensing at ITC and Wageningen University in 2003. Consequently she was engaged to transfer her acquired knowledge and skills to The Netherlands Ministry of Transport and Water Affairs where she applied an Expert System she developed to map the Dune Vegetation. In Zimbabwe and before joining SIRDC, Dr Murwira first worked as a lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) Department of Geography and Environmental Science. At UZ, she developed and delivered new courses in geographical information systems, remote sensing and spatial data analysis as well as supervising B Sc (Hon) and M Sc students. To date Dr Murwira has authored a number of papers in international journals and books. A highlight of her publishing career is her key contribution to the Photogrammetric Engineering & Remote Sensing Journal of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing entitled “Mapping coastal vegetation using an expert system and hyperspectral imagery”. Based on this publication, Dr Murwira was awarded the third place in the John J Davidson’s award for the most practical paper in 2005. She also reviews various international journals on Geo-Information Science and Remote Sensing.

Mr Blissful Mamombe assumed the role of Director of the Informatics Institute in July 2024, following a distinguished career at the institution. He initially joined SIRDC in August 2020 as a Research Scientist and showcased his talent and dedication to the field of ICT. Through hard work and expertise, he quickly advanced to the positions of Senior Research Scientist and subsequently Principal Scientist. In recognition of his capabilities, Blissful was appointed Deputy Director before he later served as Acting Director of the Informatics Institute. Before his tenure at SIRDC, Blissful gained valuable experience as a Software Engineer in various organizations, refining his skills in ICT. With specialized training in Russian methods and a strong focus on artificial intelligence, he is a respected leader known for optimizing product and service delivery, developing personnel, and driving organizational change. Blissful earned a Master's Degree in Software Engineering from Tomsk State University of Control Systems and Radio-Electronics in Russia. He also holds a Bachelor's Degree in Financial Intelligence and various certificates obtained in Siberia, demonstrating his commitment to academic excellence. Blissful’s research interest is in the area of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics technology, making him a forward-thinking and dynamic leader in the ICT industry. His innovative approach and continuous pursuit of knowledge make him a visionary in the field of ICT.

Mr Adrian Mhondiwa is the Director of the Metallurgical Research Institute (MRI), one of the institutes at the Scientific and Industrial Research and Development Centre (SIRDC). He joined SIRDC in September 2020 as an Associate Research Scientist and was elevated to Acting Director of MRI in October 2022 and substantive Director in December 2023. His prior experience was gained from La Societe D’enof de la Diatomee du Sig in Algeria, the Sciences and Technology University of Oran in Algeria and the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development, among other companies that he worked for. Mr Mhondiwa double majored in Mining and Metallurgical Engineering in his undergraduate studies and proceeded to do a Master of Science degree in Mineral Processing and Valorisation (awarded with distinction) at the Sciences and Technology University of Oran-Mohamed Boudiaf (USTO-MB). His professional experience started in 2017 in Algeria before returning to Zimbabwe to become the Provincial Metallurgist for Matabeleland South Province in 2019. Mr Mhondiwa has vast experience in hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processes, plant operation and control, optimization and commissioning, process/plant specific costing and modelling, experience in the gold, refractory ores, platinum group metals and rare earth metals and foundry processes and optimization. He has been working on high performance mining grinding media so as to reduce the country’s import bill for these products, which will be commercialised through SIRDC’s commercial arm, the Zimbabwe Technological Solutions Foundry.

Mr Mathew Ranganai joined the Scientific & Industrial Research & Development Centre (SIRDC) as a Research Scientist in the Biotechnology Research Institute in 1999. In 2002, he was re-assigned to the National Metrology Institute (NMI) and rose through the ranks to Senior Research Scientist, Principal Research Scientist before becoming the NMI Director in 2007. He also served as the Acting Director of the Energy Technology Institute from 2017-2018. Mr Ranganai holds a B Tech (Hons) and M Sc degree in Applied Chemistry and Chemical Technology from the University of Zimbabwe and Central South University of Technology (China), respectively. He also possesses Advanced Analytical Skills acquired through overseas technical programmes on Professional Skills Development undertaken at the Universities of Helsinki (Finland), Surrey (UK) and Delft (the Netherlands). He is currently a critical stage gate team member of the SIRDC Centre for Analytical Services. He has extensive knowledge and experience in Metrology acquired through rigorous training and working visits to some of the World Class Metrology Facilities which include, the National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) of, USA (NIST), Germany (PTB), Finland, the Netherlands, Korea (KRISS), India, South Africa and the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) in France. Mr Ranganai has published and presented several technical and scientific papers at seminars, symposia and workshops in countries such as Japan (Chiba Institute), Singapore, Finland (University of Helsinki), USA, the Netherlands, to mention, but a few. With regard to Board membership, Mr Ranganai is the Chairperson of the Trade Measures Board (Ministry of Industry and Commerce) and Deputy Chairperson (Scientific Metrology) of the Intra Africa Metrology System (AFRIMETS). He chaired the SADC Cooperation in Measurement Traceability (SADCMET) from 2009-2011. SADCMET is a grouping of all NMIs in the SADC region. He is also a SADC Working Group member on Chemical Metrology and Zimbabwe’s resource person for the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and a member (Chairing the Sub-committee on Compliance) of the Zimbabwe National Authority for the Chemical Weapons Convention, representing SIRDC since 1999.

Eng Mary Nyaradzayi Hughslar Chikuruwo is the Director of the Production Engineering Institute (PEI) at the Scientific and Industrial Research and Development Centre (SIRDC) from July 2023. Prior to this appointment, she was the Head of the Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Department at the Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) where she taught and supervised student projects. She has over nine years’ experience in the manufacturing industry, having started her career as a professional Fitter and Turner, excelling as a maintenance fitter in both underground and open cast mines. Her areas of expertise encompass reliability engineering, industrial automation and machine intelligence. She has made immense contributions in areas such as vibration monitoring, machine condition monitoring, reliability prediction using artificial intelligence, and maintenance planning and scheduling. Her dedication to advancing these fields underscores her commitment to driving innovation and excellence. Currently, she is pursuing a Ph D degree in Reliability Engineering with the Namibia University of Science and Technology. She holds a Master of Technology degree in Engineering Design (JNTUH, India) and a Master of Engineering degree in Manufacturing Engineering and Operations Management (NUST, Zimbabwe) as well as a bachelor's degree in Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering from HIT. Mr Isaiah Samukupe holds a B Sc (Hons) degree in Economics from the University of Zimbabwe and an M Sc degree in Banking and Financial Services from the National University of Science and Technology (NUST). He is also a holder of a Master’s degree in Business Leadership from Bindura University of Science Education. Additionally, he holds a Graduate Certificate in Business Management and Entrepreneurship from the University of Johannesburg. Mr Samukupe is a recipient of several awards which include; NUST Book Prize for overall best Student in the Faculty and the Vice Chancellor’s Award for best research thesis (2014), Book prize for Best Student in Corporate Finance from the Institute of Bankers Zimbabwe (2004), and the Best Student overall in Business Management and Entrepreneurship at the University of Johannesburg (2010). In 2005, Mr Samukupe joined the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority as a Revenue Trainee. He successfully completed training in 2007 and became a Revenue Specialist in the Taxation and Customs Audit Department, a position he held until he left the Authority in 2008 to pursue further studies in the Republic of South Africa. Upon his return from South Africa in 2011, he joined SIRDC as a Financial Analyst in the Business Operations Unit. In 2016, he was seconded to South Korea to join the Korea Africa Food and Agriculture Initiative (KAFACI) Secretariat as an International Coordinator and Project Manager. Upon his return in 2017, he rose through the ranks to the positions of Senior Financial Analyst and Principal Financial Analyst in the Business Operations Unit. In 2022, he was elevated to the position of Director of Administration at SIRDC. Mr Samukupe has extensive knowledge and experience in Economic Analysis, Project Management, Taxation, Financial Analysis, Costing and Systems Development through rigorous training and working visits to international research centres such as the Rural Development Administration of the Republic of Korea. Mr Samukupe is an Associate member of professional bodies that include: the Chartered Governance and Accountancy Institute in Zimbabwe (CGAIZ), Institute of Bankers Zimbabwe (IOBZ) and Institute of Risk Managers South Africa (IRMSA). His areas of research interest include: agricultural financing, technopreneurship, organizational performance, and research and development as it relates to improved organisational performance.

Mr John Nyamukondiwa is the Audit Manager for SIRDC since July 2023. He has over 17 years auditing experience. He joined SIRDC in 2011 as an Internal Auditor. Prior to joining SIRDC, he worked as an External Auditor at the Auditor General’s Office from 2008 to 2011. He also has substantial accounting experience having worked in the Finance Department at ZIMPARKS. Mr Nyamukondiwa holds a B Com Accounting degree, CIMA Intermediary Certificate, IAC Diplomas in Accounting and in Cost & Management Accounting as well as an LCCI Diploma in Marketing. He is currently pursuing the ICAZ Public Sector Professional Accountant qualification.

Dr Philemon Kurima Kwaramba is the Director of the Technology Transfer & Resource Mobilisation Unit at SIRDC. He has served SIRDC for over 26 years in various capacities which include: Director of Business Operations Unit (2005 - 2023); Deputy Programmes Manager for a NORAD-funded Technology for Industrial Development Programme (1999 - 2002) on Manufacturing SMEs Support and Industrial Economist/Research Scientist (1998 - 2004). Dr Kwaramba also had working stints as Economics Investigator with ICRISAT Southern Africa (1992 - 1993), Health Economist at NHIR (formerly Blair Research Laboratory, 1995-6) and Economist with Friedrich Ebert Foundation. Dr Kwaramba holds a B Sc Hon degree in Agric Economics, PG Diploma in Agricultural Engineering Systems Analysis, M Sc degree in Agric Econ, C. Dip AF (UK) and a D Phil degree in Development Economics. He was awarded the following scholarships: National Scholarship to Study A-Level Sciences (1987 - 88) after emerging among the top O-Level students in Mashonaland Wes Province; United Nations Office of Projects Services Fellowship for PG Diploma Agricultural Engineering Systems Analysis (1993) and a SADC/SACCAR/GTZ Scholarship (1994 - 1995) for M Sc Agricultural Economics. He supervises higher degree studies in Business Development and Agricultural, Health and Industrial Economics. Dr Kwaramba is a member of Marketers Association of Zimbabwe; Institute of Directors Zimbabwe, ACCA DHO C. DipAF (UK) and Zimbabwe Society of Agricultural Engineers. He is a past Board Member of ZEPARI and has consulted for the Zimbabwe Academy of Sciences. He peer-reviews articles in Development Economics for the Scientific Journals International (SJI). He represents SIRDC on international networks such as: World Association of Industrial and Technological Research Organisations and International Association of Science and Technology Parks. Dr Kwaramba is a prolific writer and has published extensively in peer-reviewed international journals and presented papers on development economics at global conferences and workshops.

Engineer Fred Gweme is a professional Electronics and Computer Engineer. He has extensive experience in the design and development of new and innovative Information and Communication Technology products and systems. He holds a BSc (Eng) Hons degree and an MPhil degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Zimbabwe. He also acquired an Executive MBA degree from the East and Southern African Management Institute. Eng Gweme joined SIRDC in 1997 and has worked in various capacities, first as a Research Scientist in the Informatics and Electronics Institute before it was split into the Informatics Institute and the Electronics and Communications Institute. He was subsequently elevated to become the inaugural Director of the Electronics and Communications Institute where he led a team that successfully designed, manufactured and commercialised a wide range of science laboratory and teaching equipment. In 2007, he joined SIRTECH, the commercial wing of SIRDC, as the General Manager of the Electronics production unit. He was later appointed the Director of the Informatics Institute in January 2010 to lead a team of ICT specialists in the design and development of various software products. In February 2024, he was appointed the Director of ICT, a post he has held to date. Eng Gweme is a registered Professional Engineer with the Engineering Council of Zimbabwe, a Fellow and former Board member of the Zimbabwe Institute of Engineers, a Council member of the Women’s University in Africa and an advisory board member of the Emerald Hill School of the Deaf. He is also a member of the National e-Waste Management Task Team which has been mandated to spearhead the formulation of a National e-Waste Handling and Management Policy for Zimbabwe. Eng Gweme has published a number of papers and has written and presented papers at various forums.
