Dr. Edson K. Chiwandika

Dr Edson K Chiwandika joined SIRDC as the Director of the Polymer and Material Science Institute in November 2024. He is a former Lecturer in the Department of Materials Technology and Engineering at the Harare Institute of Technology. He graduated with a Ph D degree in Ferrous and Energy Materials Technology (2021) and an M Sc degree in Ferrous Technology (2014) from the Graduate Institute of Ferrous Technology, Pohang University of Science and Technology. He is also a B Sc (Hons) graduate in Chemical Technology (2007) from the Midlands State University. Dr Chiwandika was a Researcher at the Graduate Institute of Ferrous and Energy Materials, Pohang University of Science and Technology in the Environmental Metallurgy Laboratory. His areas of research include the application of physical chemistry and kinetics in pyrometallurgical processes, low-grade ore utilization, removal of impurities such as phosphorus and arsenic from iron ore, and pollution prevention mechanism in the steel industries by decreasing emission of toxic gases such as CO2, NOx and SOx into the environment. He also has research interest in energy materials. Dr Chiwandika published research papers in peer reviewed high impact journals and presented at various national and international conferences. He is the former Business Unit Leader of Env-tech Industries (Pvt) Ltd, where he led the Paint Making Division and developed a wide range of Environmental Paints products from just an idea to the establishment of many distribution centres across the country.
