Unlocking Zimbabwe's Economy through coordinated Research and Development

The Scientific and Industrial Research and Development Centre (SIRDC) is proud to introduce cluster-based approach to research and development. This strategic initiative brings together scientists and engineers to tackle research and development projects. They will play a pivotal role in promotion of new research and innovative ideas.

Clusters are specialized research groups focused on specific areas of research. Each cluster is to explore and carry out research in their area of expertise, develop practical solutions, products, services that drive economic growth and enhance the overall quality of life in Zimbabwe.

1. Agriculture Cluster

Develops innovative technologies and practices to improve agricultural productivity, sustainable agricultural management and food security. The areas of expertise and research includes maize, rice and sweet potatoes varieties development.

2. Industry and Manufacturing Cluster

Focuses on developing innovative technologies and processes to enhance Zimbabwe's industrial competitiveness and manufacturing capabilities. It includes calibration of industrial equipment, 3D designing, production and maintenance of industrial equipment.

3. Energy and Power Cluster

The Cluster focus is on sustainable energy solutions, including renewable energy, energy efficiency, power generation, transmission, and distribution. In addition, the cluster develops electronic equipment for industry.

4. Information and Communication Technology Cluster:

Explores emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, blockchain and cybersecurity to drive digital transformation and economic growth. The cluster specialize in software development.

5. Health Cluster

Focuses on developing innovative solutions for livestock diseases. The research areas include livestock vaccines and Acaricides development; food and water quality testing and promotion of food preservation for communities.

6. Built Environment and Transport Systems Cluster

Works on sustainable urban planning, architecture and construction technologies to create resilient and livable cities. This extends to creating technologies that improve rural communities' livelihoods, like water harvesting and storage.

7. Water and Environment Cluster

Develops innovative solutions for water management, conservation, and environmental sustainability. In addition, the cluster provides Geo-information and Remote Sensing as well as environmental and sustainability training.

8. Mining and Mineral Beneficiation Cluster

Focuses on developing innovative technologies and processes to enhance Zimbabwe's mining sector, including mineral beneficiation and value addition.

9. Small and Medium Enterprise Cluster

Supports the growth and development of SMEs in Zimbabwe, providing innovative solutions and services to enhance their competitiveness, sustainability and work towards formalisation.

10. Commercialisation

The Commercial arm of SIRDC, Zimbabwe Technological Solutions (ZTS) gives value to all products developed by the Centre. These range from Agricultural related products in the form of seed and food to mining beneficiated products.
