Polymer & Material Science Institute

The Polymer Science Institute (PSI) plays a pivotal role in developing polymeric materials and nanotechnology applications through R & D. Its scope of work includes but not limited to:

  • Design and synthesis of novel polymers for new applications
  • Paints and coatings, inks and dyes
  • Adhesives
  • Rubber
  • Membranes and resins for various applications, e.g. water purification
  • Hydrogels for medical applications (wound dressings, contact lenses, cosmetics, among others)
  • Detergents
  • Engineered plastics
  • Composite materials
  • Design and development of polymer moulding processes
  • Energy storage and fuel cells.

Current research projects

  • Development of novel polymers for new applications in medicine, personal care, agriculture, packaging and other industrial applications;
  • Fabrication of nano drugs, nano cosmetics and nano water sanitization filters;
  • Development and optimization of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane for fuel cells; and
  • Fabrication of nano catalysts for use in fuel cells.

PSI also offers industrial support and consultancy services in the areas of material characterization, effluent treatment, polymer waste management and recycling, process control optimization, and product development and improvement, among others.
